Background: Carotid artery stenosis, also known as carotid artery disease (CAD), is characterized by narrowing of the carotid arteries due to plaque buildup, which increases the risk of stroke.
Objective: To correlate carotid artery Doppler indices with the National Institute of Health Sciences Stroke (NIHSS) scale in post-stroke patients.
Methods: A cross-sectional analytical study was conducted at the Radiology Department of Rehman Medical Institute and Hayatabad Medical Complex, Peshawar, over 9 months. A total of 74 patients (55.4% male, 44.6% female, mean age 64.4 ± 11.0 years) underwent duplex ultrasonography and NIHSS assessment.
Results: There was a strong positive correlation (r=0.793, p<0.001) between NIHSS scores and increased right ICA-EDV; a moderate positive correlation (r=0.439, p<0.001) between NIHSS scores and increased left IMT; and a strong positive correlation (r=0.926, p<0.001) between NIHSS scores and increased right ECA-PSV.
Conclusion: Severe neurological deficits, as measured by NIHSS, align with advanced carotid artery disease and increased Doppler blood flow indices. Carotid artery assessment with Doppler ultrasound can provide valuable information in post-stroke management.
